Moving, the motion picture horror film of the season... Now in 3D!

Soooo... just in case no one ever told you, moving is one of the worst things in the world to do. Actually, its your own mini hell. The discoveries made while moving shake you to your inner core. You find out that while you were watching that show Hoarders and getting frustrated with those people for fighting getting help, it was you who really needed an intervention. The revelation slowly creeps up on you and then BAM smacks you in the face.  YOU. ARE. A. HOARDER. Moving reveals the ugly truth.

Before the move you may have haughtily thought yourself a superior cleaner. How thorough you were when vacuuming and dusting.  They should do a show on how you really get into the cracks to get out that grime, you think to yourself. Then, you move and THERE. IS. DUST. EVERYWHERE. You were not as thorough as you always thought. Those cracks were not clean. You have been living in filthy conditions.  The dust you thought you were vacuuming up, was actually just visiting its friend across the street. The dust arrives home, slightly tipsy from neighbor Dusty's 20 year aged single malt, to find he missed the vacuum again. Sweet this ball of dust thinks. He then laughs, maniacally, before passing out in his soft lint bed, dreaming of all the grime he will roll in when he wakes up.

Once you see this mess, this disaster, this utter destruction of your most dearly held beliefs of cleanliness, it just gets worse. More things get moved. More closets spill their hidden hoarding secrets. That coupon you thought you would save and use "someday" is now four years expired. That face mud mask you were saving for a rainy Saturday is now solid concrete. The list goes on and on.

The thing with moving is, you never run across a $20 bill that accidentally fell behind the dresser, or the missing earring that you only got to wear once before losing its mate. That's the point where you become "super cleaner" and just start throwing everything out. I must purge, becomes your anthem. And boy, have I purged.

In some ways its liberating. When I come home, and move into a new place, it will be like a fresh clean start. Only the things I need will be there. All the frivolous mess will have fallen away. I know that when I return from Korea, it will feel good to unpack in a new place with everything organized and only the necessities. Unfortunately, that's a year or more away and right now I just feel like I need a shower. Again. And dammit, I just found that match for my earring.

  1. We're starting to purge in anticipation of moving in a couple of months. It's ridiculous, the things we tote from one place to another even though we don't use them anymore or never liked them to begin with.

Purging is a pain, but it also feels really good once you're done. So excited for you!
